PALMDALE, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team led by one stroke after the first round, and held a two-shot lead midway through the round on Sunday, but ended up finishing in second place to Pomona-Pitzer out of seven teams at the second SCIAC regular season tournament on Saturday and Sunday at the Antelope Valley Country Club.
CMS finished at +14 for the two rounds, with Pomona-Pitzer taking first at +4 after a strong finish with nine birdies and an eagle over the final five holes, while Redlands was in third at +22.
Jamison Tan was the top individual finishers for CMS at even par, including a -4 on Saturday's first round.
Tan's Saturday round included an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole to take the turn at -3. He then capped off his round with a birdie on No. 18. In windy conditions on Sunday, he had a stretch of three straight birdies from No. 14-16 to challenge for the individual title, but Pomona-Pitzer's Nilay Naik had an eagle to get separation, his third of the weekend, to finish at -5.
Yiqi (Andy) Sun was the second-highest finisher for CMS in seventh place, including an even-par first round, including birdies on No. 9 and No. 10 at the turn, and one on No. 18 to finish with a 72.
Yuefeng (Michael) Ma finished with a 71 on Sunday, including four straight birdies from No. 9-12 and a birdie on No. 18 to close it out, moving up nine spots to finish in a tie for 10th.
Arnold He came in 15th for the Stags out of 35, while
Jack Rende had five birdies on the weekend.
CMS will be back in action in three weeks for the SCIAC Championships, when it will try to secure the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
