PALMDALE, Calif. - Stella Cheng sank a three-foot putt for par on the 18th hole to win the individual title by one stroke, and also give the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team the team title by one stroke, at the second SCIAC regular season tournament on Saturday and Sunday at the Antelope Valley Country Club.

Cheng was the only individual golfer in the field to finish in the red, ending at -1 over 36 holes, one shot ahead of Emily Chang of Pomona-Pitzer, who finished at even par. Christine Yu of the Athenas was third at +4.

CMS finished with a scored +28 over the two days in windy conditions in Palmdale, which was one stroke ahead of Pomona-Pitzer. Redlands finished nine shots back in third. 

Esther Lee gave the Athenas the lead in the third-to-last group when she chipped to within six inches of the pin and tapped in for a birdie. Two groupings later, Cheng was able to put her approach within 15 feet of the green with a chance to clinch the title. 

Cheng's birdie putt skimmed past the lip and left her three feet coming back, and Chang put some pressure on her by sinking a 10-footer for par. Cheng, though, was able to roll the putt back in for the one-shot individual and team victory.   

On the day, Cheng had four birdies, including back-to-back on the 14th and 15th. Christine Yu also birdies the same two holes in the second to last grouping, which brought CMS back form a deficit before Lee's birdie on 18 provided the one-stroke difference. 

Jeissy Lee had a eagle on the fourth hole for the Athenas, after ending Saturday's opening round with back-to-back birdies, which proved to be crucial to the team title. Cheng was -1 on Saturday, including two birdies on the back nine. 

CMS will be back in action in three weeks for the SCIAC Championships, where they will try to defend their league title.
