Mareedu Breaks CMS Record for Singles Wins, Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals

Advik Mareedu celebrates a big point with Head Coach Paul Settles
CLAREMONT, Calif - Advik Mareedu won both of his singles matches to remain undefeated in Division III this season, and break the single-season CMS record for wins with 38, in advancing to the quarterfinals for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team on Friday on the first day of the NCAA Individual Championships at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

Mareedu also joined Josh Kim, and the team of Caleb Settles and Brandon Vu, in winning their opening round match in doubles to move on to the NCAA quarterfinals.

Mareedu now stands at 38-1 in singles on the year, with his only loss coming to Division II Westmont (10-8 in a pro-set tiebreaker for the third set). He passes the previous record for wins in a season of 37, which was set by Skyler Butts, when he finished 37-6 in 2016 on the way to the NCAA singles title.

Mareedu opened the day with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Gage Gohl of Gustavus Adolphus, and then won his Round of 16 match over Jacob Patterson of Denison 6-1, 6-1. He will next face Andreas Sillaste of Amherst in the quarterfinals on Saturday, which will start no earlier than 11 a.m., after the women's singles tournament starts the day at 9 a.m.

Mareedu also teamed with Kim to pick up a 6-2, 6-4 win in doubles against Middlebury to move on to tomorrow's quarterfinal round, which will begin no earlier than 2 p.m. They will be joined by Settles and Vu, who outlasted RPI in three sets 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. One of the players in the RPI doubles team, Aiden Drover-Mattinen, was able to prevent it from being a perfect day for CMS by edging Warren Pham in a second-set tiebreaker for a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5 win) in the opening round of singles.

The two CMS doubles team earn All-America honors by advancing a round, although Settles and Vu had already clinched it in the fall by winning the ITA West Regional. Mareedu clinched All-America honors in singles for the third time in his career by winning the ITA Cup in the fall, but wins it in doubles for the first time, along with Kim.
