CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Kaden Cassidy of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team earned the West Region Field Athlete of the Year Award from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the organization announced today.
Glenn Stewart was also named the USTFCCCA West Region Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year for the Stags as well.
Cassidy was the second-place finisher at the NCAA Division III Championships in the hammer throw, setting a new Claremont-Mudd-Scripps record with a throw of 210 feet even on his final throw of the championships. That throw ranks No. 16 all-time in Division III.
Cassidy first broke the CMS record with a throw of 205'2" at the Franson Last Chance Meet prior to the SCIAC Championships. That broke a mark of 204'10" that had stood since 1994, when national champion Mark Susank set it. He then added almost five more feet at the NCAA Championships to earn his runner-up finish, after also winning the SCIAC title in the event in April.
CMS captured the SCIAC Championship for the fifth straight season, and came in a tie for 13th at the NCAA Championships.
