Gonzalez Wins SCIAC Character Award, Three Athenas Named to All-SCIAC Second Team

Madison Gonzalez (shown being honored on Senior Day) earned the SCIAC Character Award
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Madison Gonzalez of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team earned the league's Character Award, and Hannah Adams, Emma Suh and Danica Stirling captured All-SCIAC second team honors in a vote of the league's coaches, the SCIAC office announced today.

The Character Award is given to the student-athlete who best exemplifies success on the diamond, in the classroom and with involvement in community and school service. Gonzalez has been a mainstay in the heart of the CMS batting order and at first base throughout her four-career career with the Athenas. An engineering major, Gonzalez was a part of the Academic Excellence team at Harvey Mudd College in addition to tutoring, proctoring the student-led metal and wood shop and conducting research into a novel space/water heating system for residential buildings.

Suh earns All-SCIAC honors for the third time in her career, playing most of this season at second base after previously also winning it as a utility player. She is hitting .343 heading into the SCIAC Tournament with 22 runs scored, including .365 in conference games. She was named the SCIAC Hitter of the Week after her performance in a critical doubleheader sweep at Cal Lutheran, including the game-winning hit with two outs in the seventh, which proved to be the difference in the Athenas earning a postseason bid.

Adams finished the regular season with a 9-6 record and a 2.26 earned run average, striking out 69 and walking just 29. She recorded nine complete games out of her 13 starts on the season, and twice earned the SCIAC Pitcher of the Week, once after striking out eight in five innings of work in a shutout win over Haverford. She also earned the win in a comeback 5-4 victory over then-No. 2 ranked Case Western on March 9.

Stirling took over the starting shortstop position for CMS as a first-year, and is hitting .296 heading into postseason play, including an impressive .400 in league games.  She had a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth of her college debut against Austin College, and had a big two-run single to give CMS the lead in a 4-2 victory over Pomona-Pitzer. She added a home run in a road win over La Verne, and had nine walks and only two strikeouts in conference, compiling a .509 on-base percentage.

CMS finished the regular season with a 20-14 record and an 11-10 mark in SCIAC, and will be the No. 4 seed in the SCIAC Tournament, opening up play on Friday at top-seed and host Redlands at 1 p.m.
