Stags Golf Takes First Place at PCH Invitational

CARMEL, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team picked up its third win in three events to start the new season by coming in first place out of seven teams at the PCH Invitational, hosted by Menlo College, on Monday and Tuesday at Quail Lodge Golf Club. 

The Stags finished at +19 over the 54-hole tournament, moving up from a three-way tie for third after the first 18 holes to win by eight strokes over SCIAC rival Cal Lutheran. Dominican came in third, 13 shots behind CMS, while CSU Dominguez Hills, Menlo, Occidental and Chaminade rounded out the seven-team field. 

Samson Li came in second place on the individual leaderboard for CMS with a -4 over his three rounds. Ryan Liang also had a top-10 finish in ninth place at +6, while Arnold He was 20th overall at +9.

Li opened up his tournament on Monday by shooting -5 over his first 14 holes, including an eagle on the 15th (his seventh hole of the day after starting on No. 9). He then closed out his second round on Monday with three birdies in his final five holes, closing strong after a 36-hole day.

Liang also had a strong finish to his 26-hole Monday with three straight birdies on No. 7, No. 8 and No. 9. He carried that over into Tuesday with birdies on his second and third holes of his final round, before ending up at +3 for the tournament. 

Sebi Aliaga had a 69 on Tuesday to shoot -2 on the par-71 course, starting the day with two birdies in his first five holes, and ending it with two more birdies on his final four holes, helping CMS secure the team title. Arnold He scored for the Stags (top four) in all three rounds with a 74, 73 and 75. 

CMS will next be in action next Monday and Tuesday at the Ottawa (Ariz.) Invitational.
