CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Katie Resendiz of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team earned the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week Award for games through Sunday, Jan. 18, the SCIAC office announced today.
Resendiz earned the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week last week after averaging 20 points in a pair of wins. This week, she added the Defensive Player of the Week Award to her resume, becoming the third Athena to win Defensive Player of the Week this season, joining
Caleigh Edwards and
Renee Chong.
Payton Sugar has also been named the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week this season as well.
Resendiz helped lead a strong defensive effort in a big 59-48 win over preseason SCIAC favorite Cal Lutheran on Wednesday, tallying four blocks and three steals while helping hold the Regals to 25.5 percent shooting. In the fourth quarter she ended seven Cal Lutheran possessions with three defensive rebounds, a steal and three blocks (which all resulted in CMS possession), and her work was also crucial in holding leading scorer Alline Ballard to 4-12 shooting.
On Friday, Resendiz also added three more blocks in a tight non-conference defeat to Hardin-Simmons, two of which came in overtime before fouling out with the score tied.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night when it hosts Redlands for a big 7 p.m. contest at Roberts Pavilion.
