Athenas Volleyball Picks Up Big SCIAC Win over Cal Lutheran

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Solvej Eversoll had a double-double with 10 kills and 12 blocks, and Stella Gajar added 11 kills and nine blocks, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team dominated the middle and earned a 3-1 win over Cal Lutheran on Tuesday evening at Roberts Pavilion.

Set scores were 25-22, 25-20, 20-25, 25-13. With the win, CMS moves to 11-8 overall and 6-3 in the SCIAC, moving within one game of Cal Lutheran (7-2) for second place. The win also took on added significance, as the Athenas would earn the tiebreaker if the two teams ended up tied in the standings, since the Regals won the first meeting in five sets, while CMS won in four.

Phoebe Shorney had 12 kills and eight blocks as CMS nearly had three kills-blocks double-doubles. Hayden Lin had 26 assists and Samantha Riter had 21, while Skye Dunn had 21 digs and Shae Delany had 15.

Cal Lutheran avoided the sweep by taking the third set, but CMS broke the fourth set open with a 7-0 run that turned a 9-7 lead into a 16-7 advantage. Eversoll had a kill-block-kill-block stretch in the middle of the run to push the lead from 11-7 to 15-7, combining on both blocks with Ari Clarkson.

The Athenas then closed out with five straight points for a 25-13 fourth-set win. Gajar started that run with a kill, and ended it with an ace, while Lauren Staples and Eversoll had a block in the middle.

The first set was tied 19-19, before Gajar and Staples had kills in a 3-0 run. A Delany kill made it 24-21, and Eversoll finished off a 25-22 win with a kill. CMS opened up the second set with a 6-0 run that turned a 13-12 lead into a 19-12 advantage, starting with two Gajar blocks, the first with Clarkson and the second with Staples.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday at Chapman, before returning home to host Pomona-Pitzer on Tuesday.
