Samson Li Shoots 64 to Lead Stags Golf to West Coast Invite Championship

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Samson Li shot a 64, matching the lowest score relative to par in program history (-8) to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team to the team title at the West Coast Invite hosted by Lewis & Clark at the Victoria Club on Monday and Tuesday.

CMS finished even par as a team, an eight-shot win over the hosts from Lewis & Clark, with Redlands third at +23.

Li's 64 matched the 64 shot by Matt Shuman at the SCIAC Championships in 2016, before the Stags later went on to win the national title. Mason Chiu shot a 63 at the SCIAC Championships in 2019, but on a par-70 course, finishing -7 for his round.

For the tournament, Li earned individual medalist honors with a -10, winning by seven strokes over Kendrick Tan of Chapman. Sebi Aliaga tied for third at -1 for the Stags, as only four golfers finished in the red. Jamison Tan was tied for seventh for the Stags at +3.

Li accomplished his 64 with a torrid stretch of 10 birdies in a span of 14 holes. After starting out with a bogey on the first hole, Li rattled off five birdies in a row on holes 2-6 to get to -4 on his round, before adding another on No. 8 to take the turn with a 30.

On the back nine, Li had another stretch of three birdies in a row to get to -9 for his round, the first of which came when he chipped in out of a greenside bunker on the par-3 13th hole. He then got to the green in two on back-to-back par-5 holes on No. 14 and No. 15, cashing in with two more birdies with two-putts.

Li's last three holes resulted in a little bit of bad luck, as his par putt skimmed the lip on the par-3 16th for only his second bogey of the day. He then had a birdie putt on 17 that tantalizingly dipped along the right edge of the cup, but stayed out. His approach on 18 left him about 10 feet for a birdie and a 63, but his putt broke to the right about halfway to the cup and missed by an inch, leaving him with a 64.

Aliaga had a -1 on his first round on Monday, and started out with an eagle on the second hole on Tuesday. He stood at even par for the tournament after 17 holes on Tuesday, but came through with a birdie on No. 18 to finish in the red and move up to a tie for third.

Logan Mills also had an eagle on Tuesday, with his coming on the 15th as part of a strong finish that saw him finish -4 over his final five holes to end at +9. Ryan Liang had a solid finish with three birdies for a -2 on the back nine on Tuesday to finish his 36 holes at +10.

CMS will be back in action in 10 days for the first SCIAC regular season tournament at Olivas Links in Ventura.
