Cahal Connolly had 20 points and
Joey Kennedy had 17 as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's basketball team clinched at least a share of the SCIAC regular season title with a 76-62 road win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday.
With the win, CMS is now 22-2 overall and 13-2 in the SCIAC, moving one game ahead of Redlands, which fell to Occidental on Saturday. The Stags close out with Redlands on Wednesday at home, with the Bulldogs having a chance to pull even with CMS with a win (Redlands would then have the tiebreaker after defeating the Stags in the first meeting in overtime).
The Stags trailed 27-26 with five minutes left in the half, before surging ahead by 12 at the break.
Reid Jones had hit a three-pointer to start the run, and then Householter followed with a jumper. Jones hit two foul shots and Connolly followed with a lay-up to make it cap off a 9-0 run and make it 35-27.
After Pomona-Pitzer hit a three-pointer to close it to 35-30, CMS hit four baskets in a row, with Householter,
Brady Karich, Connolly and Kennedy scoring in succession, before the Sagehens closed out the half with a foul shot to make it 43-31 at the break.
Pomona-Pitzer got the lead down to seven points early in the second half, but Karich hit a jumper and then fed Kennedy for two straight baskets to get the lead back up to 56-43 with 12:45 left.
The Sagehens again got back to within seven at 56-49 with 11:02 to go, but Householter hit a jumper, and
Nathan Noronha had a three-pointer to make it 61-49 and the Stags weren't threatened again.
Connolly finished 9-15 from the floor for his 20 points, while also adding nine rebounds, while Kennedy was 8-14 and had nine rebounds as well. Karich finished with seven assists, as the Stags had 20 points and nine assists as a team.
CMS will close out the regular season at home against Redlands on Wednesday at 7 p.m., which will also be Senior Day for the program's three seniors - Connolly,
James Frye and
Luke Jacobson.
