Athenas Track and Field Has Strong Effort at Salo and Crenna Invite

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophia Laudi broke her own CMS record in the javelin, and joined Elle Marsyla (3000 meters), Madeline Seifert (pole vault) and Emily Ortiz (hammer throw) as the top collegiate competitors in their respective events to highlight the performance of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team at the Pomona-Pitzer Salo & Crenna Track and Field Invitational on Saturday. 

Laudi threw the javelin 138 feet, eight inches (42.28 meters), to break her own CMS record of 135'5" and finish second overall and first among college athletes. She was also followed by two teammates, with Lorrell Shiely coming in third overall with 121'10 (37.14 meters) and Quinn Smith close behind with a throw of 118'1" (36.00 meters). 

Marsyla finished in 9:49.22 in the 3000 meters, second overall and first among collegians, with teammate Riley Capuano the next to cross the line behind her. Jie Yi Denise Chen and Emily Kendrick were the third and fourth collegians to finish. 

Emily Ortiz threw the hammer 149'4" (45.52 meters) to take first place and give the Athenas two wins in the throws. Ellabelle Higgins was third (132'9") and Shiely fourth (131'0"). Renn Corley came in third in the shot put (33'4.75", 10.18 meters) and Laudi sixth. Ortiz was also fourth in the discus (131'6") and Lulu Berwind Hoffman sixth.

Seifert, the defending SCIAC champion, was the only competitor to clear the bar at 3.50 meters (11'5.75") to take first in the pole vault, her second straight first place finish in outdoor competition.

Brannen Rosenfeld was third out of 33 runners in the mile with a 5:10.39, with six Athenas placing in the top 10. Sadie Drucker was fifth, Sienna Faidi sixth, Hope Dragseth seventh, Chloe Gudas ninth and Olivia Smith tenth.

Sydney Behrens was sixth out of 32 competitors in the 100-yard dash with a 12.92, and seventh out of 27 in the 200 with a 26.80. Skye Georgiadis was sixth out of 24 in the 800 with a 2:23.42, with Rosemary McManus right behind in 2:23.76

CMS will be back in action next weekend when it hosts the Rossi Relays, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Burns Track Complex.
