CLAREMONT, Calif. - Elle Marsyla of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's cross country and track and field teams earned first-team Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Communicators, while sprinter/hurdler Josephine Jett earned third-team distinction, the organization announced today. 

The CSC Academic All-America Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in athletics and in the classroom. Nomination for the award requires meeting minimum standards of both athletic participation and cumulative grade point average. 

Marsyla was the national champion in the 10000 meters in the spring, running the sixth-fastest time in NCAA Division III history to come back and win on the closing stretch. She also added a runner-up finish in the 5000 meters, and came in seventh at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. She also earned SCIAC Athlete of the Year honors in cross country after winning the individual title, and West Region Athlete of the Year honors in track and field. Marsyla graduated from Harvey Mudd with a 3.98 GPA as a computational biology major. 

Jett was the national runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles for the Athenas track and field team. She was also a first-team All-American in the 100-meter dash, finishing eighth, and was a second-team All-America in indoor track and field in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing ninth. Jett, a dual major in public policy and American studies at Claremont McKenna, earned SCIAC Championships in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the 100-meter hurdles, and the 4x100 relay, on her way to earning SCIAC Athlete of the Year honors.

CMS finished third in cross country and sixth in track and field as a team, behind the efforts of Marsyla and Jett, a key part in the department earning a top-10 finish (ninth) in the Leafield Directors' Cup.
