Sebi Aliaga (-2) tied for fourth as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team dominated the first SCIAC regular season tournament with a -16 team score, winning by 27 strokes on Saturday and Sunday at the Olivas Links Course.
CMS has now won five of the six events it has entered dating back to the fall, with one second-place finish to a Canadian College (University of British Columbia-Okanagan) in the fall at the Ottawa (Ariz.) Invitational.Â
CMS was -8 on both of its rounds on Saturday and Sunday, to end at -16, while Cal Lutheran was second at +11. The Stags led by only two shots after the first round over Redlands, but the Bulldogs fell into fifth after ending the tournament at +16, with Pomona-Pitzer third at +14, and Occidental fourth at +15.Â
Li, the reigning SCIAC Athlete of the Week after shooting a 64 on the second day of the West Coast Invite last week to win by seven strokes, earned another individual win with a -6, closing with three birdies on his final four holes to surge in front. He also started his Sunday round with three birdies in a row, finishing with a 68 after 18 holes.Â
Liang picked up six birdies on his Sunday round, closing with a birdie on 18 to finish at -5. His Saturday round included an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole and three birdies on his final four holes to finish at 70 (-2), before a 69 on Saturday helped him to his best collegiate finish. He had previously shot in the red (-1) in a season-opening dual with La Verne, which was 18 holes.Â
Mills earned an even par on Sunday, after shooting -3 on Saturday, including a birdie on 18 for his fifth birdie of the round. He also started out Saturday with birdies on No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 to get out to a fast start.Â
Aliaga finished his weekend with a pair of rounds under par, shooting 71-71-142. He had a strong front nine on Sunday to help CMS pull away, carding birdies on No. 3, No. 4 and No. 9 to take the turn at -3.
Jack Rende, who was playing as an individual, added an eagle on his Saturday round at No. 2.Â
CMS will be back in action next month at the Jekyll Island Invitational from March 20-22.Â
