CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Elle Marsyla of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team earned the SCIAC Track Athlete of the Week Award for events through Sunday, March 15, the SCIAC office announced today.
Marsyla broke the CMS record in the 5000 meters at the Occidental Distance Carnival by running a 16:33.31, surpassing her own PR (17:09.22) by almost 36 seconds as she moved from 10th to first on the all-time Athena list. The old record was set by national champion Bryn McKillip in 2018, who ran a 16:36.17.
Marsyla's time was the fastest at the meet among collegiate competitors, trailing only two runners from the Performance Elite Running Club. Her time is also No. 1 in Division III so far this season, and would be good for sixth in the nation last year.
CMS has now had earned five awards so far this season.
Josephine Jett took the Track Athlete of the Week last week, while
Sophia Laudi (twice) and
Madeline Seifert have earned the Field Athlete of the Week.
The CMS track and field teams will return to action on Friday when they compete at the Redlands Invitational.
