CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Caleb Settles of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned the SCIAC Athlete of the Week Award for events through Sunday, April 26, the conference office announced today.
Settles helped provide the clinch for both the doubles point and the match in singles, as CMS defeated Pomona-Pitzer in a battle of SCIAC unbeatens to secure the regular season league title. Settles and
Advik Mareedu, who are ranked No. 1 in the nation in doubles, won the tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles 7-4 to give CMS 1-0 lead heading into singles. He then dominated his singles match 6-1, 6-0 to give the Stags a 4-0 lead and clinch the team win.
Settles remarkably becomes the seventh different CMS men's tennis player to earn SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors this season, with Mareedu winning it twice. After Mareedu won on opening week,
Henry Wilson earned it after going 3-0 at the ITA Indoor Championships.
Warren Pham then picked it up on March 2 after a 4-0 doubleheader against UC Santa Cruz and Ventura, with
Sibi Raja winning it one week later after a 7-6, 7-6 clincher in a 4-3 win over Biola.
Josh Kim was the fifth winner for the Stags on March 15 after helping CMS to a comeback win against No. 7 Bowdoin and then earning a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles against Haverford. Mareedu won it for the second time after going 3-0 at the Stag-Hen Invitational, and
Amrith Kodumuri earned it on April 6 after his clinching win against Azusa Pacific, when he fought off four match points.
CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. for the SCIAC Semifinals against Caltech.
