CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Advik Mareedu of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned the SCIAC Athlete of the Year Award for the fourth year in a row, and added the league's Character Award as well, and six Stags earned all-conference honors, the conference office announced today.
Henry Wilson earned the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year Award, and joined Mareedu on the All-SCIAC first team, along with
Warren Pham, while
Paul Settles,
Chris Fabrizio,
Lestter Yeh and
Robert Liu earned the Coaching Staff of the Year honor.
Sibi Raja,
Josh Kim and
Caleb Settles rounded out the CMS honoree selections with spots on the second team.
Mareedu has never lost a SCIAC match in singles, and has only lost two matches to Division III opponents at all in the last two years (this fall in the ITA Cup finals to Ruilin Feng of Emory, and a regular season match to Michael Melnikov of Swarthmore on Feb. 20). He swept both the ITA Cup national title and the NCAA Division III singles title last year, on his way to a 41-1 overall record (36-0 in DIII). He is 32-2 this season and now has 133 wins in four years, setting a new CMS record.
Wilson has a 23-2 record in singles this year, with one loss in the fall and one dual loss against Division II Westmont. He earned All-America honors in doubles in the fall with Raja, winning the ITA West Region and reaching the finals at the ITA Cup. His combined record is 48-5, with his other doubles losses coming to Division II Point Loma and NAIA Stanton.
Pham has played mostly at No. 2 singles and has a 16-8 record this season. Raja is 19-5 in singles and joined Wilson in securing All-America honors in the fall in doubles. Settles is 14-5 in singles and has compiled a 26-4 record in doubles, mostly playing at No. 1 with Mareedu, where they are ranked No. 1 in the country. Kim has a 17-6 record in singles and a 20-7 record in doubles.
CMS will open play at the SCIAC Championships tonight, taking on Caltech at 7 p.m. at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
