CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Amrith Kodumuri of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned the SCIAC Athlete of the Week award for matches through Sunday, April 5, the league office announced today.
Kodumuri was 3-0 in singles as CMS started out 2-0 in SCIAC play with wins over Chapman and Cal Lutheran, and then took a dramatic 5-2 win over an Azusa Pacific team that was riding a 13-match win streak. Kodumuri provided the clincher against Azusa Pacific when he fought off four match points to rally from down 6-4, 5-2 in the second set (three in a row down 5-2 and a deuce point down 5-3) to win it 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. He also won at No. 3 line against Cal Lutheran 6-2, 6-3, took a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 against Chapman.
Kodumuri remarkably becomes the sixth different player to win the award for CMS this season.
Advik Mareedu has won it twice, once after opening weekend and then again on March 23 after a strong showing at the Stag-Hen Invitational.
Henry Wilson earned it after the ITA Indoor Championship,
Sibi Raja winning it after a 7-6, 7-6 win for the clincher in a 4-3 win over previously undefeated Biola,
Warren Pham earning it after wins over UC Santa Cruz and Ventura, and
Josh Kim picking it up after a sweep of Bowdoin and Haverford.
CMS will be back in action this weekend for three matches, at Whittier and Hope International on Friday and home for Redlands on Saturday at 3 p.m.
