CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Alex Henderson of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team earned the Region X Player of the Year Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association and D3baseball.com, both organizations announced today.
The ABCA had four Stags listed on the All-Region X First Team, with outfielder
Bryce Didrickson, shortstop
Dillon Martin and second baseman
Carter Bennett joining Henderson. Catcher
Max Pemberton and third baseman
Rider Gordon were on the second team, while pitcher
Kody Perry was on the third team.
The D3baseball.com All-Region selections saw Pemberton make the first team, along with Martin. Bennett and Didrickson earned spots on the second team, while Gordon was selected to the third team.
Bill Walkenbach also earned the Region X Coach of the Year from D3baseball.com.
Henderson batted .407 with 22 homers and 69 RBI for the Stags, setting a new program record for home runs in a season, and also a new career record with 41 after only two years. He also continued his postseason magic with three two-homer games, two in the SCIAC Tournament and one in the Super Regionals against Johns Hopkins. A year ago, he hit 11 home runs in seven NCAA Tournament games, with two three-homer performances in the regionals, and one two-homer game in the Super Regionals.
Didrickson hit a team-high .418 for CMS, setting a new program record with 84 hits, while recording 11 home runs, 75 runs scored and 44 RBI. Martin hit .355 with eight homers and 54 RBI, while recording a .953 fielding percentage at shortstop. Bennett hit .330 with nine homers and 58 RBI, fielding .965 at second base. Pemberton batted.373 with 13 homers and 56 RBI, Gordon hit .343 with 14 homers and 50 RBI and Perry led the pitching staff in wins at 7-1 and in strikeouts with 76.
Walkenbach helped the Stags to their first SCIAC regular season title since 1990, while coaching his club to a regional title for the second year in a row, the first two regional titles in CMS history. The 35 wins also matched the program record set a year ago.
