CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior outfielder
Bryce Didrickson and junior first baseman
Alex Henderson of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team earned first-team Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Communicators, the organization announced today.
The CSC Academic All-America Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in athletics and in the classroom. Nomination for the award requires meeting minimum standards of both athletic participation and cumulative grade point average.
Didrickson, who majors in engineering at Harvey Mudd, set the CMS record for hits in a season with 84, and led the Stags with a .418 batting average and a .506 on-base percentage. He hit 11 home runs from his leadoff spot in the batting order, and was a perfect 9-9 stealing bases. He had a 16-game hitting streak that carried into the Super Regionals, and was only snapped when he walked four times and scored three runs in the Stags' 10-9 win over Johns Hopkins.
Henderson, an economics major at Claremont McKenna, earned first-team All-America honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association, and was the Region X Player of the Year, after a season in which he batted .407 with 22 homers and 69 RBI for the Stags, setting a new program record for home runs in a season. He also added to his remarkable postseason resume with three two-homer games, two in the SCIAC Tournament and one in the rubber game of the Super Regionals against Johns Hopkins. He has now hit 17 NCAA home runs in two seasons with the Stags.
CMS matched the program record for wins in a season with 35, set last year, and won its second straight NCAA Tournament Regional. The Stags also won the regular season SCIAC title for the first time since 1990.
