CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Josephine Jett won four SCIAC titles, including tying an overall SCIAC record set in 1981 in the 100-meter hurdles, and setting a new SCIAC meet record in the 200 meters, to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's track and field team to a dominant win at the SCIAC Championships on Saturday and Sunday at the University of Redlands.
Jett also won the 100 meters, tying her personal best with an 11.74, and was part of the winning 4x100 relay team, along with
Luna Young,
Kaitlyn Creighton and
Shriya Velichala. CMS finished the meet with 262.5 points, a margin of 83 points, as Chapman was second with 179.5 and Redlands third with 111.
Jett's time of 13.78 in the 100 hurdles marked the seventh different time that she has set a new CMS record, and this time it tied the SCIAC record set by Margo Edwards of Redlands in 1981 at the AIAW meet, before the NCAA absorbed women's sports. She was also part of a CMS podium sweep with Creighton second and
Georgia Rogers third.
Jett's 200 meter time of 24.03 set a new CMS record, breaking the old standard of 24.36 set by Tyra Abraham in 2017. Jett also tied her personal best of 11.74 in the 100 meters, which is behind only Abraham's national championship winning 11.65 in 2018.
CMS won 13 of a possible 21 events at the SCIAC Championships in all, with
Emily Ortiz also adding a pair of throwing wins, taking the hammer throw on Saturday and the discus on Sunday, with
Ellabelle Higgins also reaching the podium in third in the hammer. Velichala added a 400-meter hurdles win in 1:03.63 as well to go with her relay win, while Creighton added third place.
The Athenas swept the distance events, with
Hope Dragseth setting a meet record on Saturday in the 10000 meters in 35:43.15, and
Olivia Backholm adding a win in the 3000-meter steeplechase. On Saturday,
Riley Capuano was the champion in the 1500 meters in 4:32.17, and
Elle Marsyla made it a sweep by winning the 5000 in 17:31.41.
Jie Yi Denise Chen was third in the 10000, and
Revere Schmidt took third in the steeplechase.
Madeline Seifert won the pole vault with a clearance of 11'10.75" to go with her second-place finish in the long jump on Saturday, while
Malia Ortiz also made the pole vault podium with a mark of 10'11" for the Athenas.
Sophia Laudi repeated as the javelin champion on Saturday with a new CMS record of 147'10", breaking her own mark, while
Quinn Smith added a third-place finish.
Georgia Rogers was a third-place finisher in the high jump to earn All-SCIAC honors. The 4x400 relay finished off the meet with a third-place finish as Jett, a late addition to the relay, made her way onto the podium for a fifth time, along with Young, Creighton and Velichala.
CMS will have a couple of more Last Chance meets to try to earn qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championships from May 21-23 in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
