Box Score Coming off a win on Friday night, the Athenas came out tough against the Chapman University Panthers on Saturday morning. They connected well in the opening minutes of the game and in the 5th minute Lizzie Van Buskirk (SR, San Rafael) slotted a perfect ball through two Chapman defenders to Laura Hagan (SR, Bellevue, WA) who was running on to it and calmly placed the ball past the Panther's keeper. The Athenas continued to fight and play well as a team for the next 30 minutes and had multiple chances, but none found the back of the net, and the half ended with the CMS up by a goal.
The Panthers came out in the second half fired up and ready to go. The Athenas unfortunately did not come out quite as well, and allowed a Chapman forward to dribble through the defensive line and place a shot past CMS goalie, Hannah Dunham (FR, Glendale). About fifteen minutes later, the Panthers took advantage of a throw-in that went over a defender and the ball was crossed in front of the goal and finished by an oncoming forward.
Although the Athenas worked hard in the last 15 minutes for a goal and outshot the Panthers 22 to 13, they were unable to put one away and the game ended to give Chapman a 2-1 win. CMS will take this loss and work hard over the next few days to prepare for tournament play.
CMS finished 3rd in SCIAC and will play the 2nd place Occidental Tigers on Wednesday at Occidental at 4:00 PM in the semifinals of the SCIAC Tournament.
