CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team earned one of 21 at-large bids into the NCAA Division III Soccer Tournament, and will open play on Saturday against Puget Sound in a regional hosted by Pomona-Pitzer.
Pomona-Pitzer will face St. Joseph's of Long Island in the other regional semifinal, with the finals held on Sunday at the South Athletic Complex above the First Street Parking Garage.
CMS stands at 13-3-3 on the year, and was one of three SCIAC teams to earn a bid. Pomona-Pitzer was the regular season champion, while Cal Lutheran won the SCIAC Tournament and will play in a regional hosted by Trinity (Texas).
All three of the Athenas' losses came to either Cal Lutheran or Pomona-Pitzer, while tying both foes one time as well. CMS fell 2-1 at Cal Lutheran in the regular season, and again by 2-1 in the SCIAC Semifinals, while playing the Regals to a 0-0 tie at home. The Athenas fell at home to Pomona-Pitzer 1-0 on a late goal, and then played the Sagehens to a 0-0 tie on the road.
A year ago, CMS qualified for the NCAA Tournament and dropped a 1-0 decision to Colby in a game hosted by MIT. The Athenas previous NCAA bid was in 2019, when they received an at-large despite not qualifying for the SCIAC Tournament, before going on to win the regional at Cal Lutheran (beating Emory 2-1 and the host Regals on penalty kicks). CMS eventually fell in the Round of 16 to WashU, matching the deepest tournament advancement in program history.
The Athenas also played two teams which qualified for the NCAA Tournament on its season-opening trip to the New York City area, defeating NYU 2-0 and playing Stevens to a 1-1 tie.
Puget Sound comes into the NCAA Tournament with a 13-2-5 record and an undefeated 12-0-4 mark in the Northwest Conference. The Loggers also suffered both losses to Pomona-Pitzer (1-0) and Cal Lutheran (2-1) at home back in September.
Game times and ticket information for the NCAA Regionals will be announced.
