All-Stag Finals To Be Held Tomorrow at ITA West Regionals

Brandon Vu and Caleb Settles celebrate a doubles point against Redlands
CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team will face each other in the Sunday finals of both singles and doubles after a dominant weekend at the ITA West Regionals on Friday and Saturday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. This will be only the second time in the tournament's history (2016) that the Stags have had each of the finalists in the singles and doubles championship matches.

The unseeded freshmen doubles team of Brandon Vu and Caleb Settles will take on fourth seeded Matthew Robinson and Warren Pham in the doubles final at 9 a.m. Pham, meanwhile, will face his former high school teammate and Harvey Mudd classmate, Advik Mareedu, in the singles final at 10:30 a.m. as Mareedu will try for his third straight ITA West singles title. All of the finalists will advance through to the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia in two weeks, while tomorrow's winners will earn All-America status.

There were several all-CMS matchups in the later rounds on Saturday. Mareedu advanced through to the singles final by defeating fellow Stag Anirudh Gupta in the semifinals for the second year in a row, after Gupta defeated Tarm Rojanasoonthon in the quarterfinals. Mareedu and Josh Kim fell to Yu and Settles 8-5 in an all-Stag Semifinal, but not before a thrilling quarterfinal win over Ethan Lee and Neil Chulani 8-7 (7-5 in the tiebreaker).

Vu and Settles opened the tournament with an 8-6 win over Luke Feng and Andrew Andea of Pomona-Pitzer, and then knocked off the third seeded team from Cal Lutheran (Loup Sudre and Ethan Sherwood) in the second round and then the fifth seeds from Redlands (Dominic Anderson and Jack Fanshawe) in the quarterfinals, both by 8-5 scores. Kim and Mareedu were seeded second, giving the Stag rookies wins over three of the top five seeds in their journey to the finals.

In singles, Pham had a challenging road to get the singles final. In the quarterfinals, he edged out Chapman All-American and sixth-year Caleb Wilkins (6-4, 6-4), who had met Mareedu in the ITA West Regional final in each of the last two years. In the semifinals, he faced eighth seed Gustavo Marcanth of Redlands, and had to regroup after letting a 5-1 lead get away in the third set. Helped by a let cord second serve ace that bounced twice on the net tape before trickling over the net at 5-3 in the tie-break,  Pham held on for a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(3) gut check win. On Friday, Pham needed to come back from a set and a break down for a 3-6, 6-4,(10-4) win over Ethan Sherwood to advance to the quarterfinals.

Robinson bounced back from an opening round defeat to make it through to tomorrow's consolation final. Vu and Settles will face each other in the consolation final of the B bracket. Kim and Rojanasoonthon had thrilling three-set wins over Pomona-Pitzer in the opening round on Friday, with Kim winning 6-4, 6-7, (10-3) over Luke Feng and Rojanasoonthon saving two match points down a set and serving at 4-5, 30-40, before playing two nearly perfect tie-breaks and earning a 2-6, 7-6(2), (10-6) win.

Sunday's action at Biszantz gets underway at 9 a.m. with doubles. Watch live through FloSports (subscription required).
