CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team had its annual distance meet with California Baptist come down to the final relay, but the Lancers were able to hold on for a 12-point win (108-96) over the Stags on Friday at Axelrood Pool.
The meet included the standard freestyle lengths of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1650 yards, while the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and individual medley were 300 yards. The two relays were also 500 yards, with the opening medley featuring 200 yards of the backstroke, 150 of the breaststroke, 100 of the butterfly and 50 of the freestyle.
Adam VanLuvanee had one of the highlights of the meet with a thrilling finish in the 500-yard freestyle, winning by just two hundredths of a second over Austin De La O of California Baptist (4:44.14 to 4:44.16).
Alex Johnson finished third and
Cole Sumino fourth as the Stags were able to take 14 of the 19 points from the event.
Dylan Krueger added a win for CMS in the 50 free in 21.10 seconds, a margin of .32, while
Sean Su was third and
Jeremy Tan was fourth.
Kenny Eckel gave CMS its third win in the 300-yard breaststroke in 3:19.80 in the final individual event, a margin of just over five seconds, while
Lucas Williams came in third.
The 13 points from the breaststroke (compared to six for CBU) pulled CMS within seven points and gave it a chance to win the meet if it could finish first and third in the final 500-yard freestyle relay. However, the Lancers were able to hold on by taking first place by 2.52 seconds (4:04.90 to 4:07.42).
Runners-up for the Stags included
Lucas Lang in the 1650, Eckel in the 200 free (with
Cole Sumino in third),
Dean Ko twice: in the 300 IM, just .03 behind Liam Flaherty of CBU (3:01.33 to 3:01.36) with Williams in third and in the 300 fly with
Tyler Headley in third,
Theo Johnson in the 100 free, and Su in the 300 back (with
Grant Stucky in third).
Diving wasn't included in the meet, but the Stag divers were in action yesterday at the Lancer Diving Invitational at California Baptist.
Jack Griffith earned fourth place for the Stags with 225.80 points, just edging out Reid Omillan of Chapman (224.20) as the top Division III finisher.
CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it hosts a SCIAC double dual against Cal Lutheran and La Verne, with diving starting the meet at 10:30 a.m., and swimming beginning at 11:30 a.m.
