CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team had 11 different athletes combine for 13 individual wins (in 14 events), as it took a pair of dual wins over Cal Lutheran (235.5-60.5) and La Verne (248-29) on Saturday at Axelrood Pool.
Dylan Krueger (100 back, 100 free) and
Jeremy Tan (50 free, 200 back) each picked up two wins for the Stags, while nine other athletes had one apiece. CMS also swept both relays to finish with 15 wins in 16 events on the day.
Cyrus Gaylord got the Stags started with a win in the one-meter dive in the morning, tallying an impressive 380.20 points for his six dives, with
Jack Griffith coming in second and
Luke Vlases third. Griffith followed in the afternoon with a three-meter dive win with 307.80 points, with
Ethan Sattley second and Gaylord third.
The first swimming event had the Stags earn the top three times in the 200-yard medley relay. Tan,
Evan Deedy, Krueger and
Theo Johnson took first in 1:33.28, while
Grant Stucky,
Spencer Merodio,
Weston Crewe and
Sean Su were in second place 1.5 seconds back.
Cole Sumino had a strong effort in the first individual race, clocking a 9:50.70 in the 1000 free, with
Adam VanLuvanee coming in second.
Theo Johnson led a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 free, edging out
Ben Gallegos 1:45.72 to 1:45.93, with
Lucas Lang and
Tyler Headley tying for third.
Krueger earned a win in the 100 back in 50.92, with
Alex Jiang second and Stucky third.
Dean Ko earned a 200 fly win in 1:53.89, with Su coming second, and Tan finished off the first half of the meet with a 21.71 in the 50 free, as
Collin Fitzpatrick ended in a tie for second.
The second half began with Krueger earning his second win in the 100 free, defeating
Kenny Eckel by one hundredth of a second (46.72 to 46.73), as
Alex Davies came in third. Tan then earned his second win the 200 back in 1:55.49, with Ko finishing second and Headley third.
Deedy had a strong performance in the 200 breast to come from behind and defeat Lincoln Hall of Cal Lutheran by just over a half-second (2:09.96 to 2:10.58). Deedy, the SCIAC Champion in the 100 breast a year ago, studied abroad in the fall and picked up his first win in the spring, while denying Hall a sweep of the two breaststroke events, as his win in the 100 was the only victory for a non-Stag on the day. Lang then won the 500 free for CMS in 4:44.79, with Gallegos in second.
Fitzpatrick earned a win in the 100 fly in 52.35, with
Clarence Cheam second and
Alex Johnson third. Eckel picked a 400 IM victory in 4:06.60 in the final individual race, with
Lucas Williams second and Merodio third.
Theo Johnson, Merodio, Su and Krueger then finished off the meet with a win in the 200 free relay in 1:24.65, as the CMS B team of Fitzpatrick, Crewe, Davies and Headley was second.
CMS will be back in action in two weeks for its final regular season SCIAC meet at Redlands. The Stags will next be at home on Feb. 8 for the CMS Invitational, which will be final tune-up before next month's SCIAC Championships.
