CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team won 14 of 16 events as it captured a 224-72 win over Occidental on Saturday at Axelrood Pool.
With the win, CMS moves to 4-2 overall on the season and 4-1 in conference meets. It was a team effort as
Kenny Eckel (100 back, 200 IM) was the only Stag to win multiple individual events on a day when 11 different CMS athletes earned individual first-place finishes.
CMS opened the swimming portion of the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, as
Dylan Krueger,
Spencer Merodio,
Jeremy Tan and
Theo Johnson finished in 1:33.61, to win by 1.46 seconds over the CMS "B" team of
Grant Stucky, Eckel,
Weston Crewe and
Sean Su.
Lucas Lang then won the first individual race by taking the 1000 free in 9:56.60, with
Ben Gallegos second and Josh Tanksley third.
After Occidental won the 200 free, Eckel picked up his first win of the day in the 100 back in 52.36, with Su second and Crewe third for the Stags. The Tigers earned the win in the 100 breast, but
Dean Ko followed by coming in first in the 200 fly for the Stags in 1:56.65, a margin of over 12 seconds.
Jeremy Tan took first in the 50 free for the Stags to close out the first session, finishing in 21.63 with
Tyler Headley coming in second.
Cyrus Gaylord then won the one-meter dive for the Stags with 352.70 points, followed by
Jack Griffith in second and
Ethan Sattley in third. Griffith took first in the three-meter to start the meet with 286.30 points, with Gaylord second and Sattley third.
Su opened the second half of the swimming competition with a win in the 100 free in 46.90, followed by Eckel in second and
Cole Sumino in third. Krueger then won the 200 back in 1:55.41, with
Alex Jiang in second and
Dean Ko in third.
Lucas Williams earned first in the 200 breast in 2:11.95, with
Henry Lyons second, and Merodio then earned the 500 free win in 4:45.59.
Collin Fitzpatrick was the first-place finisher in the 100 fly in 52.83, winning a close race over Matthew Spruance of Occidental by just 12 hundredths of a second. Eckel earned his second win in the 200 IM In 1:54.02, followed by Su and Ko, to cap off the individual events, and the Stags finished off the meet with a win in the 400 free relay, as Tan, Merodio, Johnson and Krueger earned a 3:10.48.
CMS will be back in action this week, with the divers traveling to the Lancer Diving Invitational at California Baptist on Thursday, and the swimmers hosting the Lancers in a distance meet at Axelrood Pool on Friday at 1 p.m. The Stags will then host a double dual meet with Cal Lutheran and La Verne on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
