Men's Water Polo

CMS Spotlight: Caiden Titus

First-Year Spotlight: Caiden Titus - Leading the Way in the Pool and the Classroom

When first-year student-athlete Caiden Titus arrived at Claremont McKenna College and joined the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags men's water polo team, he quickly embraced what it means to be part of a program that truly leads the way - in competition, in the classroom, and in the community.

A Passion that Started Early

Titus first discovered water polo at the end of third grade, when his mom encouraged him to try a new sport after hearing about a standout local coach. What began as an experiment quickly evolved into a passion that has shaped his athletic and personal growth ever since.

He credits his high school club coach, Brandon Loveless, as the most influential figure in his development. "He was always in the water with us, pushing us to get better," Titus recalls. "His skill and dedication were inspiring, and he always made time to help me improve."

Adjusting to the College Game

Transitioning from high school to collegiate athletics can be a challenge, but Titus has embraced it with enthusiasm and focus. To prepare, he increased his training intensity, spent extra time in the gym, and worked on building mental toughness for the higher level of play at CMS.

"Starting college has been super exciting," he says. "I've met so many new people and learned so much already. The team has been incredibly supportive - it's made the adjustment much easier."

One of his favorite early moments came when he scored his first goal for the Stags. "I turned around and saw the whole bench cheering," he recalls. "It showed how much energy and connection this team has. Everyone celebrates each other's success."

Balancing Academics and Athletics

At Claremont McKenna, excellence is expected both in the classroom and in competition, and Titus takes pride in managing that balance. His approach is built on discipline and time management. "I try to get my schoolwork done efficiently and study somewhere quiet so that I can come to practice fully focused," he explains. "When I'm in the pool, I want to give it my full attention."

Outside of his academic and athletic commitments, Titus enjoys being outdoors, whether skiing, mountain biking, climbing, or kayaking. He's also proud of his Dutch heritage and fluency in the language, something that adds depth to his identity and connection with others on campus.

Team Momentum and Program Outlook

The CMS men's water polo program continues to be one of the strongest and most respected in Division III. Over the past several years, the Stags have made multiple USA Water Polo Division III national championship appearances, consistently ranking among the nation's top teams and setting the standard within the SCIAC.

This season, CMS has carried that same winning tradition forward, demonstrating depth, balance, and a culture built on relentless effort. The Stags' trademark defense and fast-paced transition game have kept them among the top programs in the region, and the team's chemistry and collective drive point toward another promising postseason run.

For newcomers like Titus, joining such a competitive and accomplished group has been both motivating and rewarding. "Being part of a team that's had so much success makes you want to work even harder," he says. "Everyone here is dedicated to getting better every day."

Looking Ahead

As Titus continues to grow within the program, he remains focused on both athletic and personal development. "I'm excited for all the opportunities ahead and to keep leading the way with my teammates," he says.

With his drive, positivity, and love for the game, Caiden Titus embodies what it means to be a CMS student-athlete, someone who strives for excellence, uplifts those around him, and continues to lead the way both in the pool and beyond.
