CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team won both relays (200 medley, 800 free) by less than three-tenths of a second on the opening day of the SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships, opening up a 76-point lead on Pomona-Pitzer at East Los Angeles College Swim Center.
The 800-yard freestyle relay saw the Stags team of
Kenny Eckel,
Spencer Merodio,
Alex Davies and
Sean Su win by just .23 seconds over Pomona-Pitzer, 6:37.82 to 6:38.05, setting a new meet record in the process.
The race was a dead heat with 150 yards to go, with both teams touching the wall at 5:21.39, but Su was able to surge in front and hang on over the final stretch. The time is the second-fastest in program history, behind only last year's 6:36.85 at the SCIAC Championships.
The 200-yard medley relay won by exactly .3, with
Jeremy Tan,
Evan Deedy,
Dylan Krueger and
Theo Johnson clocking a 1:28.38, the third-fastest time in program history, edging out Pomona-Pitzer's quartet with a 1:28.68. Tan got the Stags off to a lead of .59 on the opening backstroke leg, and Deedy stretched it out to almost a full second at the midway point after the breaststroke, and CMS was able to hold on the rest of the way.
CMS also picked up a lot of points in diving with six Stags finishing third through eighth on the one-meter board.
Cyrus Gaylord came in third to earn All-SCIAC honors, with
Jack Griffith,
Ethan Sattley,
Luke Vlases,
Bennet Matazzoni and
Logan Mansfield earning fourth through eighth.
The second day of the SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships will get underway tomorrow morning with prelims in the 500-yard freestyle, the 50-yard freestyle, and the 200-yard IM, while the 200-yard freestyle relay will be held during the finals session in the evening.
