CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Advik Mareedu defeated Noah Laber of Middlebury 6-4, 6-2 on Sunday in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis singles championship to advance through to tomorrow's finals.
Mareedu improves to 40-1 overall on the season, and 100-13 in his career, as he reaches the 100-win plateau as only a junior. His 40-win season is the first in Stag history as well, as he broke the previous program record of 37 in the Round of 16 on Friday with his 38th, passing the old mark of 37 set by Skyler Butts, who capped off his CMS career with an NCAA singles title in 2016.
With a win tomorrow, Mareedu will finish the year undefeated against Division III competition, with his only loss coming in a match against Westmont of Division II, when he fell 7-6 in a third-set tiebreaker (10-8) after being up 4-0 in the third set. He now stands 34-0 in DIII matches and picked up an ITA Cup championship in the fall, the second of his career, and has a chance to win both national titles in the same year.
In the finals, Mareedu will match up with Kael Shah of Denison, who moved on to the championship match after getting off to a 3-0 lead against Javier Gonzalez of Tufts before Gonzalez was forced to retire due to injury.
Mareedu and Shah met in the fall at the ITA Cup quarterfinals, with Mareedu winning 6-3, 6-0, but Shah has since ascended to a No. 3 ranking in the country and helped Denison win the team national title earlier this week. Shah played No. 2 singles for Denison behind Ethan Green (who Mareedu defeated for the ITA Cup championship), so the two did not play during the dual match in the Stag-Hen Invitational.
Mareedu is only the sixth CMS men's tennis player to reach 100 singles wins, and the first to do it as a junior. Butts holds the career record with 128, which included 91 through his first three seasons.
