LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving 800-yard relay team of
Jasper Shue,
Kenny Eckel,
Spencer Merodio and
Sean Su won by just five-hundredths of a second to close out the first day of the SCIAC Championships on Wednesday at the East Los Angeles College (ELAC) Swim Center.
CMS was able to use the win to pull into first place after the opening day with 141 points, while Chapman sits in second with 136 and Pomona-Pitzer is in third with 128.
The Stag relay finished in 6:37.62 to edge Pomona-Pitzer's team in 6:37.67 in a nail-biting finish at the wall. Su swam the final 200 yards in 1:38.89, while Adrian Clement swam it in 1:38.93 for Pomona-Pitzer as the two anchor legs swam side by side the whole way.
Eckel had the fastest split for CMS in 1:38.30, which places him second all-time at CMS, while Shue's leadoff leg of 1:38.98 places him sixth (just behind Su's fifth-place position at 1:38.71 from last season).
The Stags also had a podium finish from the 200-yard medley relay to start the day with
Adam Lee,
Evan Deedy,
Jayden Kadiman and
Alex Davies finishing in third with a 1:31.14. CMS also got 47 points out of its divers in the 3-meter dive, with
Zach Meisel earning the high finish of fifth place with 398.50 points, and
Logan Mansfield right behind in sixth with 393.40.
Day two of the SCIAC Championships will get underway tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. with prelims in the 500 free, the 50 free and the 200 IM. The men's one-meter dive will also be held in the afternoon.
