LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
Pierce McShane earned the SCIAC title in the 500-yard freestyle, and
Kenny Eckel repeated as the champion in the 200-yard individual medley, to highlight the performance of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team on the second day of the SCIAC Championships on Thursday at the East Los Angeles College Swim Center.
CMS maintains a close lead over Pomona-Pitzer at the midway point of the championships, with the Stags at 359.5 points, and the Sagehens just 12.5 points behind with 347. Chapman is also not far behind in third with 298.
McShane opened up the evening session with a victory by almost a full second in the 500 free, finishing in 4:28.48 to defeat Quinn Delaney of Pomona-Pitzer (4:29.24). McShane also moves up a spot to fourth all-time in CMS history in the 500 with his win, while
William Jones (fourth),
Charlie Hill (fifth) and
Alex Johnson (sixth) all qualified for the finals to give CMS 62 points towards its team total.
Eckel then also had a strong win in the 200 IM, finishing in 1:49.01 to take it by almost a full second over Kyle Huang of Pomona-Pitzer, who finished in 1:50 flat.
Lucas Williams also qualified for the finals and tied for sixth in 1:51.55.
Eckel,
Evan Deedy,
Jasper Shue and
Sean Su capped off the day's action with a 3:19.47 in the 400-yard medley relay to come in second, with Deedy breaking his own CMS record for a 100-yard breaststroke split with a 54:02.
Beckett Heywood came in fifth and
Ethan Sattley sixth in the one-meter to close out the men's diving competition.
The third day of the SCIAC Championships will get underway tomorrow morning with prelims in the 400 IM, 100 breast, 100 back, 100 fly, and 200 free, with the 200 free relay taking place in the evening finals session.
