Sibi Raja won a second-set tiebreaker 7-0 to break a 3-3 tie and give the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team a 4-3 win over Biola in a battle of unbeaten teams on Saturday in La Mirada, before returning home to add a 6-1 win over Westmont.
CMS, the top-ranked team in Division III, and Division II Biola both came in with 9-0 records on the year, and the Stags were able to stay unblemished, moving to 11-0 after the Westmont win.
Raja won the decisive point at No. 3 singles 7-6, 7-6, winning seven points in a row in the second-set tiebreaker.
Henry Wilson earned a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 5, and
Advik Mareedu earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 to put CMS up 3-0, before the Eagles came back with the next three wins to tie it.
Warren Pham and
Brandon Vu secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 3, after Mareedu and
Caleb Settles earned a 6-3 win at No. 1. Biola was able to take the win at No. 2 in a tiebreaker, but CMS still took the 1-0 lead into singles, which proved to be decisive.
In the nightcap, Mareedu earned a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win at No 1, and Raja picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2. CMS also controlled the bottom of the ladder, with
Josh Kim winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4,
Rohan Yarlagadda earning a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 and
Amrith Kodumuri picking up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6.
The Stags earned wins at all three doubles lines as well, with Settles and Mareedu winning 6-1 at No. 1. Kim and Raja winning 6-2 at No. 2, and Pham and Wilson picking up a 6-4 win at No. 3.
CMS will be back in action when it takes on Bowdoin and Haverford on Friday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
