Athenas Water Polo to Host National Championships Saturday and Sunday

The Athenas earned the right to host nationals with its SCIAC championship
CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo program will serve as the host of the USA Water Polo Division III Collegiate Championships on Saturday and Sunday at Axelrood Pool.

The Tournament Home Page has links for tickets (purchased on-line only), as well as streaming through Overnght.com, and live stats from 6-8 Sports.

CMS earned the right to host the nationals by defeating Pomona-Pitzer 14-10 on Saturday to win the SCIAC Championship, the program's first since 2006. The Athenas and Sagehens could meet again in Sunday's championship, if both teams win their semifinals on Saturday.

CMS will open play on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Carthage, which earned the fourth seed in the tournament after getting a postseason upset win over Augustana. Pomona-Pitzer will play Macalester at 4 p.m. on Saturday, with Macalester earning the third seed after defeating Carthage 14-9 in the CWPA Championship game.

The Athenas and Sagehens have battled in each of the last three USA Water Polo national championships, with Pomona-Pitzer earning a 14-13 overtime win in 2023 and a 9-8 win a year ago, both of which were hosted by Augustana. Two years ago, the Sagehens hosted and were able to defeat CMS 15-10.

CMS is hoping to compete a sweep of the academic year in water polo, after the Stags won the USA Water Polo Championship in the fall, defeating Pomona-Pitzer 9-4 in the championship game at Axelrood Pool.

Sunday's schedule will feature the third-place game at 10:30 a.m., followed by the two semifinal winners meeting for the championship at 12:30 p.m.
