Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Grace Clark had five goals and three assists to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team to a 24-5 win over Carthage in the semifinal round of the USA Water Polo Division III Women's Collegiate Championship on Saturday at Axelrood Pool.
With the win, CMS moves on to face Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow for the championship at 12:30 p.m., after the Sagehens defeated Macalester in its semifinal 23-2.
Caitlin Muñoz added three goals and three assists for the Athenas, while
Isabel Del Villar had three goals and two assists, and
Fiona Murphy added a goal, as the senior class played a big part in the win. Senior goalies
Mason Spencer and
Natalie Stearns combined on five saves as well.
Valerie Wraith had three goals and team-high four assists for CMS as well.
Murphy and MMuñoz started off the game with goals before the Firebirds broke through with a tally to make it 2-1.
Jordan LaCour scored on a 6-on-5 to give CMS back a 3-1 lead, and Clark scored her first to make it 4-1.
Carthage had two straight goals to close it to 4-3, before Muñoz scored at the end of the first quarter to give CMS a 5-3 lead. The Athenas then opened the second quarter with five goals in a row to pull away, with Wraith starting the run, and
Athena Mor finishing it.
Pooja Bucklin scored twice for CMS, joining Mor and LaCour in the two-goal club.
Grace Rich had a goal and two assists,
Jasmine Tang had a goal and an assist, and
Sydney Kroonen had a goal and an assist.
CMS and Pomona-Pitzer will meet for the fifth time this season, with each team winning twice so far. CMS won the last meeting on Saturday for the SCIAC title, its first since 2006.
