Amelia Ulmer Takes SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year Honors for Athenas Lacrosse

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Amelia Ulmer of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team earned the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year Award in a vote of the league's coaches, and was one of seven Athenas chosen to the All-SCIAC first team, the conference office announced today.

Ulmer was joined on the All-SCIAC first team by draw specialist Julia Ryan, goalkeeper Lyla Johnston, defender Kate Risse, midfielder Cate Lewison, and attackers Grace Minturn and Ella Seidel

Ulmer enters the postseason with 49 goals and 20 assists on the season, leading the Athenas in goals scored and points. She closed out the regular season with an eight-goal performance against Chapman, and had hat tricks in 11 of 16 games, including six goals against Cal Lutheran and five against Redlands.

Minturn earns All-SCIAC honors for the fourth time, including taking the Offensive Player of the Year Award as a sophomore. She has 27 goals and a team-high 31 assists this year, ranking second behind Ulmer with 58 points, and closed out the regular season with four goals and four assists against Chapman for a season-high eight points.

Johnston is in her first season as a full-time starter in goal for the Athenas, and has tallied 107 saves and a .453 save percentage. She had 14 saves in a win over Bates, 17 in a game against nationally ranked Chicago, and 12 in both meetings with Pomona-Pitzer.

Lewison earns first-team All-SCIAC honors for the third time, after missing last season while studying abroad, and has tallied 21 goals and 20 assists this season. She also leads the team with 24 caused turnovers and 29 ground balls, while earning 42 draw controls.

Seidel ranked second on the Athenas in goals with 40, while also chipping in 11 assists.  She had a stretch of five goals in three straight games, two against Redlands and one against Redlands, with a season-high six in a 19-12 win in the second meeting with Redlands.

Risse overcame some early-season injuries to become the defensive anchor for the Athenas in the second half of the year. She won the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week after tallying four caused turnovers and four ground balls against Redlands, and also had two caused turnovers against nationally ranked Colorado College, Chicago and Amherst.

Ryan has 298 draw controls this season, leading the nation for the second year in a row, and has already broken the NCAA all-divisions record for a career as only a junior with 838. She had 346 a year ago, a mark she can pass in the postseason this spring, and has also contributed eight goals and six assists offensively.

CMS opens SCIAC Tournament play this evening with a 7 p.m. home game against Redlands. The winner will move on to the SCIAC Championship on Saturday.
