Julia Ryan Earns Second-Team All-America from IWLCA, Six Earn All-Region

Julia Ryan's work on draws was a big reason the Athenas made it back to NCAAs
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Julia Ryan of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team earned second-team All-America honors from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), while six members of the Athenas were named to the all-region teams, the organization announced at its Final Four weekend.

Ryan earned the honor as a draw specialist after leading the nation by a wide margin for the second year in a row with 352. As only a junior, Ryan broke the NCAA all-divisions record for draw controls, and heads into her senior year with 892, poised to go well over 1000 in her four seasons, after nobody had ever reached 800 previously.

Ryan was joined on the IWLCA All-West Region team by senior midfielder Cate Lewison and senior attack Amelia Ulmer. Second-team selections included senior goalkeeper Lyla Johnston, senior attack Grace Minturn, and sophomore defender Kate Risse

Ulmer finished the year with 65 goals and 25 assists for 90 points, while adding SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year honors. Lewison finished with 24 goals and 27 assists for 41 points, while picking up a team-high 40 ground balls.

Johnston had a 10.61 goals against average in net for the Athenas, while Risse led CMS with 28 caused turnovers in front of her. Minturn was the team leader in assists with 41, while adding 34 goals and 32 ground balls.

CMS finished with a 13-6 record and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four years, defeating Whitman in the first round and nearly taking down top-10 Pomona-Pitzer in the second round in a 14-13 defeat.
