VENTURA, Calif. - Sebi Aliaga tied the program record by shooting -8, in his second round of the day, to help the defending national champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team to a 10-shot lead after the first day of the California State Intercollegiate at Olivas Links. 

Aliaga shot a 67 in the morning, and then came back in the afternoon to go even lower, shooting a 64 to become the third player to shoot -8 for a single round in program history. Current teammate Samson Li became the second to do it last year at the West Coast Invite, while Matt Shuman was the first to card a -8 at the 2016 SCIAC Championships. Mason Chiu shot a 63 at the SCIAC Championships in 2019, but on a par-70 course, finishing -7 for his round. 

After two rounds, Aliaga stands at -13 and has a seven-shot lead on the individual leaderboard, while Logan Mills and Jamison Tan are tied for third at -5, one shot out of second. Li is also in the red at -1 following his first 36 holes. 

Aliaga was the individual champion at the NCAAs last year when he birdied the 18th hole under pressure twice (once on the final round and once in the playoff), and picked up right where he left off, starting off the day with three birdies in a row. He had his only bogey of the 36 holes on No. 6, but picked up three more birdies for a 67. 

In his second round, Aliaga started out with back-to-back birdies, and then finished with a torrid stretch of five birdies in his last seven holes to card his record-tying 64. 

Mills had an eagle on the fourth hole in his first round, and a string of three straight birdies in his second round. Tan had a string of four birdies in five holes in the first round, and another one of five birdies in eight holes in his second round.

First-year Teddy Turo also closed out his 36-hole day with an eagle, finishing -4 on his final five holes to help add to the CMS lead. Ryan Liang added a first-round 70 for the Stags, carding four birdies on his first eight holes. 

The third and final round will get underway at 8 a.m. tomorrow.
