VENTURA, Calif. -
Sebi Aliaga shot a -7, one day after tying a program record for a single round with a -8, to finish in first place and lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team to a 14-shot win for the team title at the California State Intercollegiate on Tuesday at Olivas Links.
Aliaga finished at -20 to shatter the program record for low score in a tournament, shooting 67-64-65 over his three rounds for a 196, winning individual medalist honors by 11 strokes. Aliaga was the NCAA Individual champion a year ago, when he led the Stags to the team title, their second national championship in program history.
As a team, CMS finished at -28 at the California State Intercollegiate, with Pomona-Pitzer in second place at -14 and Occidental and Redlands tied for third at -9.
Logan Mills finished at -7 after shooting in the red all three rounds to come in fifth place,
Jamison Tan was at -2 in a tie for tenth, and
Samson Li finished in the red at -1 to come in 13th.
Aliaga shot 10 birdies in his round on Tuesday, including one on the 18th hole to end his round at -7, and complete his tournament at -20. His 64 yesterday tied the program record of -8, first set by Matt Shuman at the 2016 SCIAC Championships and matched last year by
Samson Li at the West Coast Invite (Mason Chiu had a 63 on a par-70 course at the 2019 SCIAC Championships for a -7).
On Tuesday, Aliaga briefly got to -8 again with a chance to accomplish that feat for a second day in a row, after picking up four birdies in a row on No. 7-10, and then two more on No. 13 and No. 14. However, he then hit his only tough patch of the entire three rounds with bogeys on No. 15 and No. 16, before finishing off with his 10th birdie of the round and his 24th of the tournament.
Teddy Turo finished in the red for the Stags on Tuesday as well at -1, picking up birdies on three of his last four holes, on No. 17, No. 18 and No. 2 (after starting on No. 3). He also finished strong on Monday with an eagle on his 36th hole of the day.
CMS will be back in action on Oct. 5-6 at the Blue Streak Invitational, hosted by John Carroll.
