CLAREMONT, Calif. -
Jack Bryant of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team earned the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week Award for games through Sunday, Sept. 27, the conference office announced today.
Bryant had the game-winning goal in sudden-death overtime as No. 1 CMS won at No. 2 Redlands 10-9 in its only game of the week on Saturday. He also had a team-high three steals on the day from his center defender position, and helped the Stags hold Redlands scoreless in the fourth quarter as they came back from a 7-5 deficit to force overtime.
Bryant scored his game-winner on the first CMS possession of the sudden death OT session, converting from long range as a Redlands power play expired to give the Stags the win in their SCIAC opener. He becomes the third CMS winner in as many weeks of competition, after
Nick Kennedy won the Offensive Player of the Week twice (Sept. 8 and Sept. 21), around a week that CMS was idle.
The Stags will be back in action on Wednesday night for a big Sixth Street Rivalry matchup with Pomona-Pitzer at Axelrood Pool at 7 p.m. It will also be a rematch of last year's national championship, which the Stags won 9-4 for their second USA Water Polo Division III title in the last three years.
