On Saturday, playing away on Cal Lutheran (1-8-2, 1-6-1 SCIAC)
turf, the CMS Men's Soccer Team (6-2-2, 4-1-2 SCIAC) was able to
come from a first half deficit to win 2-1 in the final 20 minutes
of play.
After the Kingsmen's near miss in the 18th minute,
Harrison
Doyle (SO, Hidden Hills) rocketed a shot from far out that
barely missed, flying past the CLU keeper and hitting the far right
post. Unfortunately, in the 32nd minute of play
Jorge Martinez of the Kingsmen was able to finally convert and
struck a nicely placed ball from about 12 yards out to score the
first goal of the match.
Cal Lutheran was able to maintain their 1-0 lead through the
first half. The Stags didn't give up though and pressured the
CLU defense from the moment the second half started, outshooting
the Kingsmen 9-3 and earning 5 of their 8 corner kicks in the
second half.
In the 71st minute the Stags were able to tie up the
game when Eric Bean (JR,
Waukee, IA) assisted a goal by Stefan
Gonzalez (GR, San Gabriel). The game winner came for CMS
with just ten minutes left, when a deflected shot by John
Shaughnessy (FR, San Diego) was rebounded and finished by Ian
Anderson (SR, San Francisco).
CMS will play at Whittier (6-4-1, 4-2-1 SCIAC) on Wednesday
night at 7pm. In their last matchup the two teams played
through double OT for a scoreless draw.
