Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – In the final minute of the second overtime, junior defender Ian Shelton (CMC) had one last chance to win the game for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team, but his shot hit the post as CMS and Hardin-Simmons ended in a 0-0 tie on Sept. 5 at Trinity University's Paul McGinlay Field.
Just two games into the young season and CMS' offense has gone 200 minutes without a goal, but its defense has been stout, allowing just one goal and that came against sixth-ranked and perennial power Trinity (Texas).
Hardin-Simmons also had its own opportunity in the second overtime to win the game as Blake Odell's header went wide. In the two overtimes, CMS senior Hogan Marhoefer (CMC) attempted two shots with one blocked and one going wide. Marhoefer attempted a team-high four shots while Shelton took three.
Over the course of its match, the Stags put five of their 12 shots on goal, but Hardin-Simmons goalie Michael Vargas turned the Stags away on each occasion. The CMS defense held Hardin-Simmons to just one shot on goal and that came in the 28th minute, a shot which sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Cui (CMC) saved as he registered his first-career shutout.
CMS had five corner kicks to three for Hardin-Simmons.
After two non-conference matches to start the year, CMS jumps right into SCIAC play with a match at La Verne on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.
