CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's cross country team received one of 22 at-large bids to the NCAA Division III Championships and will be attending nationals this weekend in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
The Stags finished third in the NCAA West Regionals in the pouring rain on Saturday, which was enough to earn them one of the 22 addition bids from 10 regions across the country. Pomona-Pitzer earned the automatic bid by finishing first, and Colorado College also earned a spot by finishing second.
CMS will be making its 17th straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Championships, dating back to 2008 (with a one-year break due to the pandemic). Both the Athenas, who earned an automatic bid by winning the regional on Saturday, and the Stags are on streaks of 17 straight bids.
The Stags have earned top 10 finishes in three of their last five trips to nationals, including sixth place in both 2019 and 2021. CMS also earned a 10th-place finish in 2023.
On Saturday, the Stags had six runners earn All-Region honors, led by
Hayden Beauchemin, who came in fifth.
Jacob Pippel,
Pierce Clark,
Jonas Rickert,
Hale Behan and
Jerry Xu also earned earned medals with top-30 finishes.
The men's national championship race will take place first at 10 a.m. local time (7 a.m. Pacific) at Milliken Research Park in Spartanburg, S.C., with the women's race following at 11 a.m. (8 a.m. Pacific).
