Box Score 4 FULLERTON, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team opened its 2026 season at the Fullerton Mini Tournament on Friday and Saturday, earning a 1-3 record with a 10-9 win over CSU Monterey Bay on Saturday, as well as three losses to Division I programs.
CMS also fell on Friday to San Diego State 15-9, and to host CSU Fullerton 13-12 on Friday, and capped off the tournament with a 21-5 defeat to Long Beach State on Saturday,
In the CSU Monterey Bay win on Saturday morning,
Grace Clark had five goals and two assists to lead the Athenas, while
Caitlin Muñoz had a goal and four assists.
Muñoz had a penalty shot with 2:24 remaining that put CMS ahead 10-8. The Otters bounced back with a goal with 2:00 to go to close to within one, but
Isabel Del Villar came up with a key steal to thwart a potential tying possession, and the final CSU Monterey Bay shot sailed wide.

Valerie Wraith,
Tatum Dwyer and Del Villar each added goals for CMS, while Wraith had a team-high three steals. Del Villar put CMS ahead to stay with a goal in the third to make the score 7-6 after the teams were deadlocked at the half, while Clark added one of her five goals to give CMS an 8-6 lead heading into the fourth.
Mason Spencer had two saves in the second half, allowing three goals, to get the win, while
Natalie Stearns had six saves in the first half for the Athenas.
In the tournament opener against San Diego State on Friday, Muñoz led the Athenas in points with two goals and three assists, and Del Villar added a goal and three assists.
The nightcap on Friday was a thriller that saw the host Titans come away with a 13-12 win in a back-and-forth battle. Clark and LaCour each had hat tricks for the Athenas in the defeat.
Clark had back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter to tie the score up at 10-10 with 4:26 to go, and LaCour made it 11-11 with a goal with 3:34 to go. The Titans, though, answered back to go ahead to stay with 3:19 to go on a goal from Sofia Moschetti, and
Fiona Murphy's late goal could only draw CMS back within 13-12.
Muñoz had two goals, and Dwyer, Wraith and LaCour added a goal apiece for CMS in the tournament finale against Long Beach State. The 49ers, though, opened the game on a 4-0 run and built a 9-2 lead at the end of the first quarter to take control early, as the Athenas finished 1-3 on the weekend.
CMS will be back in action in two weeks when it travels to the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego.
