Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
Grace Clark had four goals and
Valerie Wraith added three as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team finished play at the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego with a convincing 15-8 win over Division I CSU Fullerton on Sunday morning.
With the win, CMS improves to 3-5 on the season, while avenging a 13-12 loss to the Titans two weeks ago at the Fullerton's tournament, when the Athenas were still just one week into practice after returning from the winter break. The Athenas were 2-2 at the Triton Invitational, falling to Division I foes USC and UC Davis before defeating Pomona-Pitzer 10-5 yesterday.
CMS led 5-3 at the half, but was able to open it up with five goals in the third and five in the fourth. Clark opened the second-half scoring with a goal on the first CMS possession, and Wraith followed with another less than a minute later. After the Titans scored to make it 7-4, CMS scored three goals in a row to open up a six-goal lead, with Clark starting the run, followed by a goal from Caitlin Munoz and one from
Tatum Dwyer, her second of the game.
The Titans came back with three straight goals to close to within 10-7, but CMS answered with three more of their own to put it away.
Jordan LaCour scored with 6:29 left to push the lead to 11-7, Wraith scored with 5:25 left to make it a 12-7 game, and
Isabel Del Villar netted one with 4:28 to go. Wraith and Del Villar then capped off the scoring with back-to-back goals in the final 3:15 to make the final score 15-8.
Muzon, Dwyer, LaCour and Del Villar all finished with two goals for the Athenas, who had six goal-scorers all with multiple tallies.
CMS will be back in action in three weeks when it opens SCIAC play with a road contest at Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m.
