EAGLE ROCK, Calif. –
George Kruger repeated as the SCIAC Champion in the javelin with a throw of 199'3" on his final attempt, and
Kaden Cassidy earned the SCIAC title in the hammer throw, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team opened up a huge lead on the first day of the SCIAC Track and Field Championships, hosted by Occidental.
CMS has 91 points after the first day of the two-day competition, while Caltech stands in second with 38 points and Chapman is in third with 33.
Cian Bryant (javelin),
Oliver Pick (steeplechase),
Leo Sundstrom (pole vault), and
Hale Behan (10000 meters) each earned All-SCIAC honors with third-place finishes in events that had their finals today.
Kruger threw 189'9" on his first attempt, which held up as the best mark of the day, until he passed it by almost 10 feet with a 199'3" on his sixth and final throw. He set a new PR by almost five feet, passing his previous best of 194'6", moving up to fifth in CMS history, and into 17th in Division III this year (pending other results from this weekend), in position to qualify for nationals. Bryant's 178'4" also set a new PR by three inches and earned him a spot on the podium, while
Austin Cacioppi (fifth) and
Zach Kwong (sixth) also scored for the Stags.
Cassidy threw the hammer 185'8" to take first place, while
Kavin Prasanna, last year's hammer champion, took second with 172'2" to earn All-SCIAC honors.
Logan O'Keefe was sixth with a distance of 143'6" to add to the CMS point total.
Pick came in third in the steeplechase in 9:11.42, while
Agustin Gomez de la Vega was fourth and
Jacob Pippel fifth to give the Stags three scorers.
Leo Sundstrom was third in the pole vault, clearing 15 feet even, while
Flynn Meier also scored with a sixth-place finish (14 feet). Behan was third in the 10000 in 31:17.89, with
Jerry Xu coming in fourth and
Daniel Fajardo fifth to join the list of Stag scorers, while
Eric Filson (fifth),
Joshua Martinez (seventh) and
Jonathan Holcombe (eighth) scored for the Stags in the long jump.
In prelims,
Emmett Stralka ran a 10.64 for the top time in the 100-meter dash prelims, moving up to sixth in CMS history and taking .13 off his previous personal best.
Colin Scanlon had the top time in the 400-meter hurdles, coasting in after winning his heat by a substantial margin with a 54.85.
Jaden Rattay earned a spot in the finals of the 400 with a 49.68, which won his heat and placed second overall.Martinez was second in the 110-meter hurdles with a 14.89, tops in his heat, and he will be joined in the finals by
Evan Siegel, who was fifth, and Filson, who was seventh.
Three Stags also reached the finals of the 1500 meters, with
Jonas Rickert earning fifth,
Arnav Shetty seventh and
Rowan Haywood-O'Neill ninth in prelims. Two reached the finals of the 800 meters, as
Ellis DelVecchio (1:56.39) and
Pierce Clark (1:56.47) were second and third, respectively, with times just .08 apart.
The second day of the SCIAC Championships gets underway tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the decathlon, while field events will begin at 3 p.m. with the shot put and triple jump, followed by track events starting at 4:30 p.m. with the 4x100 relay.
